How can I be an aircraft mechanic without going to college?
When you think of aircraft, you probably imagine very complex machines made of very complex systems. Because of this, you probably think it’s impossible to maintain these machines without higher education, such as a college degree.
That’s completely understandable, because these machines ARE complex. In fact, they are so complex that to be an aircraft mechanic you will have to study and know many different systems that make aircraft fly.
The good news is that you don’t have to have ANY kind of degree to learn or work on these systems, and they’re actually EASY to learn and understand!
It’s kind of amazing when you actually think about it! You could be working as an aircraft mechanic right now making $30 or more PER HIOUR, without spending any money or time to go to college.
Of course, the people that design and engineer these complex machines have advanced degrees, and that is where some of the confusion comes from. If you want to be an engineer who designs aircraft or aircraft systems, you will definitely have to go to college and acquire a degree.
Again, if you want to become an aircraft mechanic you don’t have to have a degree of ANY kind. I’ve known aircraft mechanics that didn’t even graduate high school!
Designing a complex machine is one thing; working or maintaining a complex machine requires a completely different set of skills. In fact, most engineers that design aircraft would probably NOT make good aircraft mechanics.
The designs they engineer are complex, but maintaining them is usually not. I’ve known mechanics with less than a year experience that were making $20 an hour working on everything from the engines to the seats in the airplane. And that was nearly ten years ago!
